United, Continental fliers bid for experiences

United Continental Holdings today launched MileagePlus Headliners, an auction program that lets frequent fliers of the newly merged United and Continental Airlines use their miles to bid for experiences such as trips and tickets to theater and sporting events.

More than a dozen auction items were made available today, including a pilot training session in a United flight simulator in Denver, a Mammoth Mountain ski trip, and tickets to performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Each month, there will be at least one bidding opportunity. Later in January, MileagePlus members will be able to bid to go to the Team USA Experience at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and later this year, they will be able to vie for a spot on United’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner delivery flight.

Minimum bids range from 5,000 to more than 20,000 miles.

Other airlines, such as Alaska Airlines, have tried mileage auction programs.

The new MileagePlus program is an extension of Continental’s OnePass Auction program. United and Continental’s frequent-flier mile programs are in the process of being combined.
