Super-sized Omni hotel added to Dallas Convention Center

With a 2.1 million square-foot convention center, it’s only fitting that the city of Dallas would build a super-sized hotel to go with it.

On Friday, the Omni Dallas Hotel opened to much fanfare with 1,001 rooms, 110,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and 7,000 original pieces of art from 150 local artists. The imposing building connects to the even more imposing convention center via a skybridge.

City officials are hoping the hotel will help revitalize the city and draw big conventions. Things are looking promising so far. Two years in the making, the hotel actually opened early and under budget. It has already contracted nearly 300,000 room nights, according to an Omni press release. In the 24 months before the May 2009 announcement of plans for the hotel, the visitors’ bureau booked 18 citywide meetings. Since then, it’s booked 55, according to the release.

“As we open the doors to the Omni Dallas Hotel today, we can confidently say Dallas is again competitive,” Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said in the press statement. “We have reinvigorated our world-class reputation in the large meetings and convention industry.”

Guests can choose from several dining options including Bob’s Steak Chop House, a Dallas institution, and Texas Spice, a casual farm-to-market eatery. There’s also Mokara Spa and the Uptown Terrace, which has a pool with a view of the skyline.

And until Dec. 30, guests can book the “Definitely Dallas” package with rates starting at $111 in honor of the hotel’s 11/11/11 opening. For more information, go to
