San Francisco W hotel objects to museum addition

The hip, arts-and-design loving W hotel chain’s San Francisco location is trying to block the city’s beloved San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from building a new wing, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Adjacent to the Third Street museum, the W hotel claims that the museum “failed to properly explain how building its 230,000-square-foot expansion will slow down traffic in the area,” the Chronicle tells us.

The hotel’s concerned that traffic will suffer since the project will require closure of part of the street that the W relies on for its guest valet parking and guest loading and unloading, the story says.

The activities would be moved to other streets that are already congested, the story says.

With the project, the museum hopes to double the amount of gallery space and add several outdoor terraces.

Officially, the hotel last week filed an appeal of the expansion project’s final environment impact report, which the city’s planning commission had already certified last month. The Board of Supervisors will hold a hearing on the appeal on Jan. 10, the Chronicle says.

“If it rejects the appeal, the hotel can sue, delaying a project that until now has had few opponents and is scheduled to open in 2016,” the story says.
