Rs 3m approved for scientists’ travel

THE Punjab Agricultural Research Board (PARB) has approved Rs 3.148 million for 13 scientists to attend international conferences and present their research papers.

In its 30th meeting of executive committee, it was informed that PARB travel grant provided an opportunity for scientists to participate in international conferences, build collaboration and present their research papers.

Pakistani scientists have got special recognition through this platform and many innovative ideas are being generated for future research projects.

Punjab Agricultural Research Board funds travel grants to only those scientists whose research paper has been accepted to be presented in international conferences.

The executive committee suggested the idea to fund travel grant opportunity to students and research fellows as well. The proposed idea will be placed before the Board for approval.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Agricultural Research Board Chief Executive Dr Mubarik Ali said that during the 80’s to 90’s decade, capacity building opportunities were provided to many students through international participation.

The government should encourage more students to participate in international programmes by providing them with travel grants.

Their exposure and knowledge on latest innovation can be utilised for research and development projects.

The meeting has also approved Rs 1.71 million to hold two international workshops, “International Conference on Applied Genetics and Biotechnology (8-11 Dec 2011)” to University of Agriculture Faisalabad and “1st International Conference on Safe Food and Human Health (10-11 Jan 2012)” to Government College University, Faisalabad. The conferences will open new prospects and will be beneficial for stakeholders.
