Report: Allegiant to charge $35 for carry-ons

An Allegiant spokesman confirmed the plan to Today in the Sky on Monday afternoon.

With that, Allegiant will be just the second big U.S. airline to charge fliers for putting carry-on bags in overhead storage bins. Spirit Airlines announced it would do so in April 2010, saying it would charge customers as much as $45 to place a carry-on bag in an overhead storage bin.

Like Spirit, Allegiant will allow customers to bring on one personal item free of charge, but only if those items can fit under the seat in front them. Bags that must be put in overhead storage bins will cost $35 if not reserved in advance, according to the report at

Allegiant apparently will offer a discounted rate if purchased online in advance, but says the carrier “has not confirmed how much the fee’ will be.

Allegiant is a Las Vegas-based leisure-oriented carrier that flies mostly from small U.S. cities (route map) to 10 focus cities. The carrier’s focus cities are Bellingham (Wash.); Fort Lauderdale; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Myrtle Beach, S.C. (seasonal); Oakland; Orlando Sanford; Phoenix-Mesa; Punta Gorda (Fla.); St. Petersburg (Fla.).
