Does Spirit promo mock American’s bankruptcy?

Spirit Airlines appears to be poking fun at the bankruptcy of American Airlines’ parent AMR as Spirit promotes its just-announced new routes from Dallas/Fort Worth International.

Spirit on Tuesday announced it would fly to four new destinations from DFW, which is American Airlines’ biggest hub and is just a short distance from AMR’s headquarters.

To tout its new service, a Spirit press release noted $11 promotional fares on the upcoming routes to Atlanta, Boston, New York LaGuardia and Orlando. Spirit added the routes “marked a new chapter in Dallas/Fort Worth’s (aviation) history.”

So, where’s the barb aimed at American?

Reporter Terry Maxon of The Dallas Morning News explains, writing:

Get it? If American had filed Chapter 7 papers, Spirit’s customers could have saved $4.

Spirit has a long history of running off-color adds, such as ones that poked fun at the Arnold Schwarzenegger-Maria Shriver break-up or the Anthony Weiner sexting scandal.

As for the $11 fares, that offer expired Wednesday.
