Delta: Buy up to 10,000 elite-qualifying miles

Delta frequent-fliers may not have to make that end-of-the-year mileage run after all.

That’s because the nation’s No. 2 carrier is selling Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) that count toward earning elite status.

MQMs are miles that count only toward earning elite status within Delta’s frequent-flier program. They cannot be redeemed for frequent-flier awards.

Delta is offering the MQMs in four increments: 2,500 MQMs for $295, 5,000 for $495, 7,500 for $695 or 10,000 for $895.

The offer runs through Dec. 15, though the airline is clear that all MQM purchases are nonrefundable. Delta adds that the miles purchased through the MQM offer will count toward a customer’s Rollover MQM total.

And, for the uninitiated, “mileage runs” are trips taken by frequent-flier enthusiasts for the simple goal of racking up miles that can either be applied toward future award tickets or toward elite status for the following year (or both).

Such trips often come on long routes with low fares, providing frequent-fliers the chance to earn mileage at what’s perceived to be a bargain rate. In many cases, mileage-runners will travel out and back in the same day, never leaving the airports at their “destinations.”
