Celebrity Cruises cancels parasailing trips after death

Celebrity Cruises has canceled all parasailing excursions in the Caribbean indefinitely after a passenger died this week on one of the trips, the Virgin Islands Daily News reports.

Celebrity Eclipse passenger Bernice Kraftcheck, 60, fell to her death on Tuesday while parasailing in tandem with her daughter off the coast of St. Thomas, where the ship was docked, the Daily News says. Kraftcheck’s daughter, 34-year-old Danielle Haese, was seriously injured during the incident, the news outlet says.

The Daily News says squalls and wind gusts in St. Thomas on Tuesday afternoon may have factored into the death, and at least six territorial and federal agencies are investigating.

The Celebrity parasailing excursion, conducted by St. Thomas’ Caribbean Watersports and Tours, offers two riders at a time the chance to soar 400 feet above the water for eight-to-10 minute, at a cost of $79 per person, the news outlet says.
